newsThe truth is that Mark came to me and asked if I’d be interested in this project he was working on. His fourth cd, a swing/country-themed record that he wanted to ‘make look like those old western shirts, the piping, the embroidery, etc’. Then he handed me a rough copy of "Hillbilly Pilgrim". Not only did it have great songwriting, and sound like rediscovered old 78s found in your grandparents' basement, it also had a full fledged Christmas song on it to boot. I couldn’t be more happy or proud to have been involved. Did I mention he’s up for a Grammy nomination?

John’s work on this cd is just the latest in a line of striking musically oriented collaborations with art director/designer Jeff Mellin.

newswith over 150 years under its asteroid belt, ‘scientific american’ is, needless to say, one of the most well respected and consistently excellent periodicals in the business.

my most recent project with art director jeff mellin was ‘oral and whole body health’, a special publication produced in collaboration with procter & gamble presenting cutting edge research on the systemic implications of oral infection and inflammation.

working with jeff is always a delight.

newsLast fall I worked with Kim Haliday at Carter Haliday on this powerful series of portraits for the Weston School of Theology. This year the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, CASE has selected that project, the Weston Jesuit School of Theology’s Campaign for Weston Jesuit Case Statement as a recipient of the 2004 Gold Metal for Individual Development Publications out of 216 Entries!

newsThere’s a new book out about putting a portfolio together, and I’m in it. Selina even writes that I’m one of her favorite photographers and a fearless talent. My part mostly deals with editing and layout… Of course my photos are my favorite part, but you should check out the whole book anyway. From what I hear it’s the first book about building portfolios in 20 years, it’s going all over the world and did I mention: I’M IN IT! It was even reviewed in ‘ O ’ Magazine, and you know how I feel about Oprah!

John Soares Photos. 68 Piedmont St, Arlington, Ma 02476 781.641.3378the new book ‘The Design Of Dissent: Socially And Politically Driven Graphics’ looks at the ways that artists can communicate ideas that force us to question the politics of the moment. assembled by designer milton glaser, a founder of new york magazine and the designer of the iconic i heart n.y. campaign. and he has some strong feelings about the role of design in a democracy. the provocative images question authority, and, says glaser, speak truth to power. included is a photo i shot for lisa and john gibson’s (ct. graphic designers) holiday card (shown here) illustrating how peace, the most vital thread keeping our world united and healthy, has been burnt and broken.
