The thing about light is this: why fake it when the real thing is so remarkable?
For the past decade and a half, John Soares has been capturing the essence of real people in their real environments. Depending on your point of view, his work is either a modern twist on the classical aesthetic, or a classical twist on the new aesthetic. Some people might want to call what he does environmental portraiture. But not me. I see a guy who has a strong, seasoned gut for natural light, refreshing composition, who delivers on the content, and infuses every shot with an unexpected sense of honesty and visual economy.
"You can count on John to treat his subjects with respect, with dignity, with a light touch—a bit of humor—an easy-going groove. Transitioning seamlessly between the digital and the analog world, he shoots for lots of major magazines and he’s won a bunch of big awards. But, come on: would you expect anything less from a guy who blends talent with vision, respect, dignity, and humor? I wouldn’t think so."
